Disaster preparedness training for UNESCO Associated Schools

UNESCO Associated Schools (ASPnet) located in areas vulnerable to natural hazards in Latin America and the Caribbean are taking part in a new disaster preparedness project. Within the framework of the South-South Cooperation Fund, it trains education officers and national ASP coordinators to promote prevention and disaster preparedness at school level.

Mobilizing schools to prevent disaster" was the title of the first capacity-building workshop held in Quito, Ecuador, on 18 - 19 March 2010. ASPnet coordinators and schools from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela participated. Organized by UNESCO Santiago and UNESCO Quito, it addressed issues related to education planning in emergencies and disasters as well as the role of education in disaster risk reduction. Challenges and solutions were discussed with regard to the Andean region, taking into account the curriculum, as well as institutional and policy aspects. Participants made a commitment to promote the lessons learnt and to develop a prevention plan for their respective institutions.

A second workshop is taking place from 29 - 30 April in Trinidad and Tobago, with the participation of selected English-speaking Caribbean countries.

A regional online platform with specialized information on education and disaster risk reduction will ensure the wide dissemination of good practices, materials and tools for education authorities, teachers, development agencies and the public.
